US House Interior Committee Approves 35% Cuts for NEA and NEH

US House Proposes 35% NEA & NEH Cuts

On Tuesday July 15th the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies passed a funding bill for FY26 which allocated $135 million each for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), which is a 35% reduction from the FY25 allocation for both agencies. This reduction in funding would result in considerably less funding for the arts in North Carolina, including a loss of roughly $450,000 to the NC Arts Council.

Earlier this year President Trump released a budget proposal that would have eliminated all funding to the NEA and NEH. As a result, it is very likely that allies of the President may try to introduce amendments when this bill goes to floor of the US House of Representatives in the coming weeks to further reduce or eliminate federal cultural funding. We must tell our NC Congressional delegation to protect the NEA from further cuts and to increase these allocations because the NEA and the creative work they empower are vital to local economies and communities across our state.

We will also need to tell Senator Tillis and Senator Budd that these cuts will have a significant impact on the creative industries and that a larger allocation from the US Senate for the NEA is needed to avoid damaging the arts industries which are still recovering from the pandemic and natural disasters in various regions.

You can also post your story on social media of how NEA funding has made an impact on your community and your life and tag your Members of Congress with the hashtag #ProtectTheNEA.
