NC AELC Proclaims Arts in Education Week 2022
The organizations of the NC Arts Education Leadership Coalition (AELC) have officially proclaimed September 11-17, 2022, as NC Arts in Education Week. This coincides with National Arts in Education Week which the US Congress designated in 2010 to occur during the week beginning with the second Sunday of September. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to advocate, educate, and celebrate about the impact and transformative power of the arts in education.
This year is particularly meaningful because the students who are beginning 6th grade this fall will be the first class required to take an arts credit to graduate from high school in North Carolina! Arts North Carolina and many of our partners in the Arts Education Leadership Coalition worked for nearly a decade for the NC Arts High School Graduation Requirement to become state law. We are excited to see the impact on our students across the state and look forward to pursuing more policy to support Comprehensive Art Education.
Be sure to check out the resources at both ArtsNC.org and ArtsEdNC.org to help you advocate, educate, and celebrate arts education all year. Use the step-by-step easy-to-use toolkits to encourage your local school board to pass an Arts ARE Education proclamation or engage local candidates on arts education issues by hosting a candidate event or with a candidate survey.
And of course, be sure to take a moment during Arts in Education week to thank an arts educator for their hard work and the tremendous impact they have on our students. Arts NC would like to thank Chuck Stowe of the NC Theatre Arts Educators for his years of leadership with NC AELC and for spearheading the initiative for the 2022 NC Arts in Education Week proclamation.
