March is Art in Our Schools Month Proclaims NC AELC

March is Art in our Schools Month, and the NC Arts Education Leadership Coalition has issued an official proclamation supported by all ten member organizations including Arts North Carolina. Additionally, at the request of NC Music Educators Association, Governor Roy Cooper issued a proclamation declaring March as Music in Our Schools Month. March is designated in the United States as the month to highlight arts in schools collectively, or by individual discipline (Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual Art).

March (or April, or May) is the perfect time to have local school boards issue an Arts ARE Education Proclamation, highlighting the value of these subjects in our schools now, just before next year’s budgets are finalized in the coming months. Arts NC has created an Arts ARE Education Proclamation Toolkit to provide advocates easy-to-use step-by-step instruction. Student artwork or performances at these meetings can make the experience much more memorable and effective. In the last two years ten school districts in North Carolina have passed these resolutions covering over 28% (more than 1 in 4) of public-school students in the state.
