NC Governor Proclaims Arts in Our Schools Month
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has officially proclaimed March 2024 as Arts in Our Schools Month at the request of Arts North Carolina. During this month, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to advocate, celebrate, and educate about the impact and transformative power of the arts in education. March is designated in the United States as the month to highlight arts in schools collectively, or by individual discipline (Dance, Music, Theatre, & Visual Art).
March (or April, or May), is the perfect time to have local school boards issue an Arts ARE Education Proclamation highlighting the value of these subjects in our schools just before next year’s budgets are finalized in the coming months. Arts NC has created an Arts ARE Education Proclamation Toolkit to provide advocates easy-to-use step-by-step instruction. Student artwork or performances at these meetings can make the experience much more memorable and effective. In the last several years ten school districts in North Carolina have passed these resolutions covering over 28% (more than 1 in 4) of public-school students in the state.
